Traumatic Brain Injury

I noticed some of the Sugru treated coils from 6 months ago were starting to lose the bond with the rubber on the coils. I gave the area a good cleaning with alcohol and wrapped it with the silicone tape, starting on the black wire where it goes into the rubber, going right over the top of the Sugru, ending above the end of the Sugru. The tape adhered good to the Sugru, I think the combination of the two works best. The Sugru is flexible like the rubber, more rigid than the tape alone. Flatten the Sugru when putting in to avoid making them bulky and uncomfortable.

good to know! thx… been thinking of how i could eliminate the friction that wears out the wire and connection to the coil. will take this into consideration!

love this tape! very sturdy and easy to apply to reinforce wire… will see how long it lasts. Bob, you should definitely consider wrapping with this tape than what you’re currently using!

I had my wife try a self-adhesive silicone tape like that a few years ago. I’ll have her try it again, thanks.

Hey @OptimalHealth, please let us know how the tape helps/doesn’t help the life of the coils. Since we have 2 M1s and use them all the time, I have gone through probably 6 pairs of coils so far in 4.5 years - always due to the connection wearing out from the wire to the coil due to all the movement/mechanical stress it experiences. Would be great to get a little more life out of my new pairs of coils.

dummy me… i misplaced my silicone tape, so i can’t show you the new way I’m taping them that will make the wires last for years if not 10+ years!

i’ll have to post this on another post later so that it stays on topic. but yes, will let you know how everything goes.

I am watching this discussion closely to see how well we can collectively solve/improve the coil life span limits. I just purchased some of the silicone tape you recommended (but I got the clear, not the black). We’ll try your new taping method (when you find your tape!) and at that point I’ll chime in with my technical/practical thoughts.

we should probably move the last few comments of this thread to a separate post specific to coil wear and tear

so this was what i was thinking of how to wrap my coil to protect the tugging and wear and tear of the wire from the coil
… loop it like this:

so that ANY tugging on the wire does not stress the connection at the insertion point.

the only disadvantage i see other than a little bulk bulge to the cable is the shortening of the wire.

here’s the finished wrap:

I did something similar on the 2X2 coil array pictured. My husband has used this tape at work, he says you are supposed to stretch it 50% as you apply it. It takes two people, one to hold the coil and the other to apply it. You have to be careful not to let the tape stick to itself, making sure it lays as flat as possible before you press it down. If that happens you can cut the tape off and start again over the top of the flat tape. His opinion is that the “tape only” method is still too flexible and using the Surgu sparingly, applying it flat, and then putting the silicone tape over the top is stronger. The most important area for the Surgu application is where the wire enters the rubber to help keep the wire intact, which is where most of the coil failure occurs. Like Optimalhealth mentioned, try not to make it so bulky that you end up with a bulge. My tape is applied over the top of the Surgu on a brand new coil.

the silicone tape looks promising… a cheap way to mitigate tension and wear on the wire!

did you loop your wire? that’s what i ended up doing with my single coils.

your lead on using surgu led to the quick and cost effective use of silicone tape! thanks again. let’s see how the wear goes! :crossed_fingers:t4:

I crossed the tape diagonally, like a figure eight, doing it 2 or 3 times, alternating the sides for 2 figure eights when I was done. If you skip the Surgu, then 3 times would be better for a stronger grip on the wire. I have been successful getting a coil fixed that was inconsistently working. The wire was starting to pull out, so pushed it in and applied the Surgu, making sure to test that the coil was clicking before letting it dry.

I think your suggestion for a new category like “Maintenance & Repair Tips for
Coils”, or something similar, is a good idea  Thanks

Which tape did you buy? Thanks so much for sharing this

Hello, which brand of silicone tape did you use? Thanks so much for sharing this with us :star_struck:

sorry for the delay… This is what I got and used:
LLPT Self Fusing Tape 2 Pack Self Bonding Wrap Tape 33Ft Total No Adhesive Weatherproof for Hose Emergency Repair Cable Insulation Barbell Pull Up Bar Dumbbell Tools (SFB36) https://a.co/d/2W5Klkw

in hindsight, I’m finding that whatever tape you use what seems to work really well for me and doesn’t have the tape. degrade from heat is putting a sock over the entire coil,. I did this with the rubber tape that I used and the tape did not erode compared to the one without a sock on it. This is more for sleeping on it than it is for any other use that I’ve tested it on. when sleeping on it the wear and tear is a lot more
