Simple fix, by ensuring plugs are in all the way, for my C5 that is overheating and shutting off

Today, I learned something new about my C5 that saved me from mailing in the device to Bob for repair (and it didn’t need repair - it was user error!).

Per @Bob from the comments at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkMmqx5AcRI

“One or more audio plugs is slightly pulled out (~ 1mm) This can cause a short that overheats the device.”

I found two plugs slightly pulled out (though visually looked plugged in) by pushing them in and now I no longer see red flashing or the LCD message of channel 1 or 2 overheating with shutdown.

I wanted to post this so if someone searches for C5 Overheat or C5 Overheating or B5 Overheat or B5 Overheating it would show up.

Here is the full text from @Bob’s troubleshooting comment on that youtube video.

"Hi Vince. What is happening is that the B5 is probably overheating. All gen 6.0 ICES systems (B5, C5, M1) have several internal systems to prevent damage from use. This includes a comprehensive overheat prevention system. Each channel has a temperature sensor that prevents overheating by flashing the red LED as the device begins to overheat, then it shuts down the outputs.
It may be some other type of failure, but this is probably it. The causes are:

  • One or more audio plugs is slightly pulled out (~ 1mm) This can cause a short that overheats the device.
  • The device is operating at high frequency, or high output power, or both. Just like a car, it is possible to run the B5 too hard and cause it to overheat. Try slightly lower intensity and/or lower frequency.
-This will correct overheating about 99% of the time. We see very few failures other than this.
Also note: the 2x2 coil arrays make muck lower clicking noise than individual coils. Sometimes you actually can not hear them even when they are working fine. The only way to know for sure is to use the hexagonal coil test chip that comes with the system."

Another way of troubleshooting this on the C5 is to use the blue button (second from the top). Once the device is running, press the blue button, and it will show whether all of the coils are plugged in as expected (if plugged in, it will say ‘OK’).

See slide 55 of the manual (which I failed to read until now).
