I just received the C5
What is the cable sticking out of the device. It is a 5 inch USB cable sticking out like a sore thumb.
I assume it is for external power,
A connector would have been less unsightly.

Its the USB Power connector. Its the better more stable solution. Sockets get easily broken or wear out. Lots of people have to dump their phones, because the USB-sockets get broken. You can easily strip a USB power-bank under the C5.

Yes! And I like it, because it fits very well on a Power-Bank and it is very sturdy and more flexible than two “bulky” connectors and a bridge cable.
Actually, it used to be just a barrel connector, but this change was requested by many users and is widely preferred over the older design for the reasons stated by @hcf . The barrel connector is still there though if you prefer it. When using the barrel connector be sure to only use 5VDC or you will destroy the C5.

I have not used it portable yet, still tied to an outlet. So I may appreciate its design and function then.
Was the barrel connector built in flush, or still and external cord hanging out.

I would only use battery! This way you avoid alternating AC-fields and high frequency DC/DC-converter fields near to you. A 10-15.000 mAh Power-bank gives you up to ~ 24h even with 4 coils attached.
Sounds good, shopping for a 5v 2A 10,000 mah power bank now
I do use Stetzer filters to negate transient high frequency .
